Soak Stain Paintings
“Red City With Yellow.” Oil on raw canvas.
Edition 1 of 1. 37 x 40. Creation Date: June 1, 2020.
Painted in response to Covid-19 and the second Los Angeles Uprising.
One day I heard so much noise outside my apartment. I walked outside and saw a car explode into flames. I was caught in a box of protestors with LAPD surrounding us, guns pointed, for over five hours just two blocks from home. For the next two weeks we all stayed inside as looters burnt and destroyed every shop in a 2 mile radius. I spent time on the phone receiving frantic calls from my friends in the neighborhood who were watching their stores burn. Later, the National Guard came into our neighborhood and covered it in barbed wire. On Santa Monica boulevard the clubs were still full of partiers, some masked, some unmasked. Protestors marched and the city screamed in pain.
